The Stylish Blogger Award

I have been presented with the award mentioned above.

What in the world is stylish about me, I don't know. But the extraordinary, fantastic Tony Benson saw it in me. *wink* You've presented me with my first award and shall remain a substantial part of my life. ...Terry, was it? Nah, I'm joking. I'm joking and it's not funny and it's early in the day.

Without further ado, I continue my acceptance post. So, in order to accept this award, I have to 1) Thank and link to my nominator, 2) Share seven things about myself, and 3) Present the award to ten recently discovered bloggers, and notify them.

So, seven things about me.

ONE: I'm thinking about querying overseas for an agent because the Australian market is not only tiny, but I'm also quite cross with its prices.

TWO: I'm an accelerated art student and I sketch, ink and paint my novel's characters, settings and some scenes. Check out the gallery link on the sidebar.

THREE: I have two jobs, one at a pool kiosk where I get $10 an hour and another where I make soccer videos for professional use at an academy.

FOUR: I live on the north shore of Sydney, Australia.

FIVE: I have a younger brother. He's called Tom. He's taller than me now.

SIX: I watch too much TV, including Doctor Who, Criminal Minds, Sherlock, Band of Brothers, Supernatural, Batman: the Animated Series, Nikita, Caprica, Big Bang Theory, etc. The list does indeed go on. (And here you thought I was born with these snarky references of mine) My family are movie buffs.

SEVEN: My favourite article of clothing is this hideously bright jacket my father got in Burma when he was a 20-year-old backpacker -> Is made of marijuana.

So, yeah, there's me. Now for my list of recently discovered bloggers who you should pay visits to.

1. Michelle at Aggghhhhh
2. Ellen at EllenFaith
5. Becca at The Bookshelf Muse
6. Trish at Word + Stuff
7. Lydia at The Sharp Angle
8. Misa at Misa Buckley

...And I really don't have another one.

  1. Oh, you're lovely! Thank you.

A weed jacket? XD That's classic. Whenever I shop at Salvation Army I find jackets with...interesting things sewn in them.

Also, totally query over here in America! We (I) love you!

  2. Ohhh, thank you for this :D I really appreciate it.

    Also:

"You've presented me with my first award and shall remain a substantial part of my life. ...Terry, was it?"

Hahaha, this cracked me up. :D

I agree with you about Aussie book prices. I assume that's what you meant by 'prices' anyway. Hehe. It's just rude. I can't believe you can get a book for $10 or less and that's note even on sale!

  3. Wow! I would LOVE to be able to sketch my characters. Sadly, my talents in that area are of the stick figure variety, lol.

Thanks for naming The Bookshelf Muse for this award! I'm so glad you visited and found our content useful. I see The Sharp Angle listed too--this is one of my most favorite blogs! I look forward to checking out the others.

    Have a great week!

  6. I love Sydney - I've been there 3 times now, and all in all I've spent about two and a half months there. I'm not a city dweller by nature, but Sydney is one of the few cities I would live in.

Not sure what an 'accelerated' art student is, but your art is fabulous. Love it!

  7. Thank you! And I so love this post. Me = film addict and former mega-wannabe actress. I even wrote to a few producers in L.A. when I was sixteen, telling them exactly why I should be their next starlet, even though I'd only ever acted in my high school play. Not surprisingly, they never replied.

  8. You're so welcome guys.

    @TONY
"Accelerated" is just short for "I took my final school exams for art two years early". (:

  9. The marijuana jacket sounds quite stylish. If I could find a swim ring made out of Mountain Dew, I'd be all over it.

Thanks so much for nominating The Bookshelf Muse for this award. I've recently come back to blogging and have been making a list of blogs to check out. I'll definitely add the other 7 to my list!

Say hip hip hooray for absurdly long titles. (And if you didn't catch those references, look here (at 2:50) and here ) I apologise profusely here, boyos. School has been an even greater burden that I'd ever imagined. If I want this mark I've been blabbering about, I am going to need to clone myself. Seriously. It's been a long week since I last spoke to you all and I'm afraid it may be another until I can break above the water. I'm drowning in homework, and core texts that I absolutely despise. In fact, I'm starting to look a little like this: And this glorious situation sparked me with inspiration as gracefully as lightning destroys a palm tree. Inspiration for, well, my blog. *Casts longing glance to manuscript in the corner* As I tried to straighten out my weekend to catch up on all the work I missed when I was sick this week, I realised that Saturday - my devout RETURN revisions day - was being consumed by extra reading/film viewing/art sketching for s

"In 900 Years of Time and Space, I've Never Met Anyone Who Wasn't Important Before" (Problem: Boring Lead, Riveting Supporting Cast)

I received an email the other day from a reader (who wanted to remain anonymous in this post - but we'll call her Sarah) who told me that she was having trouble getting into her protagonist, despite this being her most prominent POV. She is dynamic as many Young Adult characters are, but at the beginning she's anxious and self-doubting because she's in that adolescent phase when you realise everything you know about yourself is completely wrong and you're just starting to discover who you REALLY are. There's not much that makes her like me (or am I kidding myself?) even though I've been in the same position as her. Well maybe not exactly since this is YA SF, but as far as her emotional state goes, I've been through that. But I just feel like she should've developed more by now, and she still feels like a faceless stock character. Bildungsroman is the nature of YA above all, and that relatable trait for the protagonist is necessary. To some extent,

Have we seen the end of action-oriented YA?

Well, have we? A lot of writers struggle with balancing action and suspense with realistic development and emotion. I've received a couple emails about concerns that in writing physical struggles at the forefront, internal conflict plays second fiddle.  In many ways, characters vs. plot  or even the conflict in pleasing your readers vs. pleasing yourself. We get caught up in all the little opinions - agents condemn certain features and talk about the importance of "emotion" and issues relevant to the YA audience, and critics on sites like Goodreads can be absolutely brutal about their preferences.  We as authors have a tendency to reconsider our choices and our work in their desire to be relevant and pleasing and, well, good. But it's all about balance. And I do mean action-oriented   and not action-packed .  All plots have a sense of urgency to them, and that pacing is absolutely vital. It's important not to forgo that in the mistaken
